Metal Fabrication Processes

BENDING – Bars and tubing are forced to bend to the desired shape

BUMPING – The press brake is for this process, which is similar to forming. Though with bumping, the metal is hit (bumped) many times to force the metal to curve.

CLADDING – The process of joining metal to wood, with adhesives, to give the appearance of solid metal.

CUTTING – There are a variety of cutting processes. Band Saw cutting consists of a very thin and narrow blade, which circles inside the band saw, causing teeth of the blade to rapidly cut through material. Cold Saw cutting is a process often used for tubing and bar stock. [Also, see PLASMA CUTTING.]

DRILLING & TAPPING – With the drill press, holes are drilled into the metal and if a threaded hole is required special taps are used to cut the threaded into the hole.

FINISHING - Acids, heat and moisture are used to chemically changed the color of the metal. (Available finishes include Antique, Pewter, and Etched Finishes)

FORMING – Using the press brake, sheet metal is placed between and upper and lower die and the press brake forces the sheet metal to bend (form) to the desired shape.

GRINDING – Using abrasive disc grinders the metal is ground down to remove any scale, pits or weld; also used in preparation for polishing.

LATHE –To change the O.D. of a piece of metal by slowing trimming the metal while is spins very quickly in the lathe. A lathe is commonly used to create cylindrical shapes, such as a solid steel leg or circular railing or pole.

MACHINING - Material-working processes where power-driven machine tools, such as lathes, milling machines, and drill presses are used with a sharp cutting tool to mechanically cut the material to achieve the desired geometry.

NOTCHING – A process that forms a slight indentation in the metal.

PLASMA CUTTING - A form of torch cutting that offers a smoother cut than standard torch cutting. Both use heat and gases to create the intense heat required to cut through the metal.

POLISHING – Finishes are achieved by using a series of different grit abrasive belts or discs until the desire finish is achieved (i.e. satin, polished, random texture, etc.).

POWDER COATING – The metal is charged with static electricity causing the powdered paint to adhere to the part. Heat is then applied to melt and liquefy the powdered paint causing it to cover the part.

ROLLING – Sheet metal, tubing and bars can be rolled to form a radius.

SHEARING – The shear is used to cut metal. It is a clean but very sharp cut used for straight cuts only.

WELDING – The process of joining two pieces of metal. We are equipped to support a wide range of welding applications, including those best suited for MIG or TIG welding, dual shield, stick or spot welding. Welding services are also among portable services that may be used for on-site applications.
